NEW YORK CITY SEES RISE IN CRIME
Monday, September 15, 1924

NEW YORK, SEP 15 -- Four years after the Eighteenth Amendment, known commonly as the Prohibition Act, was ratified, New York City has remained far from dry. Despite daily busts of saloons and breweries by the NYPD, underground speakeasies and smuggling rings remain fully operative and on the loose. This past week alone has resulted in a slew of grisly murders, shoot-outs and kidnappings all with ties to mob activity. With such a heavy undercurrent of crime brewing in the streets, the mayor has urged citizens to do their part and report any suspicious behavior or individuals to their local police department.

MECHANICS

WHODUNNIT {a 1920s themed mafia game} SeOtXFV

This is a closed-role game with a bit of a twist. Each role has a persona associated with it,
each with their own appearances, personality traits, and histories.

Some of the town roles are investigative, however instead of learning a player’s alignment,
they will learn details like the player’s character’s hair color or history instead. Other town
roles will be able to tie characteristics to roles or alignments. (Perhaps someone in mafia
has blonde hair? Maybe the journalist has a tattoo!)

Mafia roles will be counter-investigative, messing up results in some way. Town must work
together to piece together the information and discover who might be mafia, whereas mafia
will try to mislead town at every turn.

Rollover will take the form of newspaper articles and obituaries; there will be clues as to
which roles are mafia and which are town in rollover. Alignment will be revealed upon death.

TOWN wins when it has eliminated all of the mafia.
MAFIA wins when its number equals that of town.

I don't have any plans to run this game any time soon, but this is the oft mentioned 1920s puzzle maf I keep talking about. It's balanced to be a constraint satisfaction puzzle first, and a mafia game second.

The vast majority of possible investigation results have already been pre-written. I have a giant file somewhere on my main computer for this.

I have waited for this game ever since I first saw it on your journal. I live for games that are basically puzzles in disguise.

Yes.

This takes me way back to hats mafia which had a pretty similar mechanic that involved players getting clues about which hat the mafia was wearing.

Going back through old files and I found that I have some flavor text pre-written too so I went and added that in.
